Metavers, THE solution for sustainable tourism!

I hesitated for a long time to put a question mark after the title of this article. Anti-metas-pro-green-authentic-tourism should already be angry #onveutduvraibordel. In fact, tourism is not that, it is not pseudo-virtual happiness: it is closeness, humanity, authenticity,…

Certainly, but as Guillaume pointed out in a recent article, investments in Metaverse are already monstrous: a market capitalization of $30 billion (which only concerns the 190 tokens listed on Coinmarketcap), social actors investing colossal sums (tens of billions of $ for Facebook) etc.

So the question is not when do we go there, but how best to use these technologies in our models.

THE METAVERS: A DEFINITION AND A LITTLE HISTORY!

According to Wikipedia: A metaverse (from English metaversecontraction of meta universe, i.e. meta-universe) is a virtual world. The term is regularly used to describe a future version of the internet in which virtual, persistent, and shared spaces are accessible. about 3D Interactions. Another definition sees the metaverse as the set of virtual worlds connected to the internet and perceived in augmented reality.

Some key data (1) :

1992 | Dystopian novel The Virtual Samurai by Neal Stephanson : We find there the story of an apocalyptic world in which a wealthy entrepreneur has built a parallel world in which he mixes virtual and augmented reality in order to control the minds of its users.

2003 | Second Life, the first free 3D metaverse : This universe attracted more than 20 million users, but in 2008 it could not escape the combination of the subprime crisis and the increasing disinterest of investors and customers.

2018 | Reader Player One directed by Steven SPIELBERG : A reference film that shows a humanity that prefers to lock itself up in an addictive metaverse, expensive and controlled by big corporations.

2020 | Travis SCOTT concert on Fortnite: Travis SCOTT starred in the first massive 100% virtual concert within Fornite and managed the feat of bringing together 12 million viewers.

2021: Launch of Meta: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announces his company is changing its name and concept and launching a Metaverse.

HOLORID

Audi announced the creation of Holoride at CES 2019. A virtual reality entertainment solution for the rear passengers of a car is to be developed via an independent start-up, but supported by this car manufacturer and also by Porsche. The technology uses a virtual reality headset with sensors that is paired with the vehicle. The content of the headset therefore adapts to the movements of the car in real time.

In terms of content, different experiences are offered to escape from the vehicle’s passenger compartment: pilot a spaceship, discovery of the Jura world, but local tourism could be an interesting playground to switch from the virtual to the real. .

Finally, Holoride defends the benefits of a solution that significantly reduces motion sickness symptoms. So to see if you have complete peace of mind driving during a long family drive or if you sadly need to clean the seats after 10 minutes of driving.

NEXT EARTH

Next Earth offers users the opportunity to own virtual land (in the form of NFTs) whose parcels are the exact replica of Earth. From then on, you have the ability to sell and barter these goods as you please.

In addition, NextEarth is committed to the environment through a “charity pool” that is fed from the various transactions on the platform: Next Earth – Blockchain Metaverse Project. Over $1 million has been raised and this is just the beginning.

Finally, the rapid development of VR technology aims to become a fully immersive metaverse social platform that can replace physical reality.

WILDIMMER

A project under construction that aims to develop an edutainment approach via an immersive experience to raise awareness of biodiversity challenges. To bring this metaverse to life, Wild Immersion will capitalize on its catalog of more than 160 animals filmed in 360° on all continents.

The business model will be based on subscriptions and the purchase of “skins”, but there will be an in-depth mechanism that will allow donations to be made to nature conservation associations. On Wild Angels Island and through game mechanics, animal rescue programs or land purchases for rewilding areas are advertised (win a special skin if you support a club).

BUT

THE METAVERS: It’s dirty!

It is difficult to approach the metaverses without decorrelating them from the cryptos and the a priori negative of these technologies: basically it is a bubble that is polluted and used to fund terrorist initiatives. Even if radicalism is the trend today, it should be countered with moderation and scientific rigor:

Regarding the mining industry and its impact on the environment:

It accounts for 0.1% of global energy consumption (2) and competes directly with gold and the banking industry, which have a much larger environmental impact. It’s all a matter of perspective: an additional technology to pollute the environment, or a more virtuous technology to replace an old model.

The antis will also point out that these technologies fuel money laundering. The latest Messari report (3) however, shows a volume of illegal transactions of 0.15% in 2021 (compared to 0.34% in 2020). Figures that should be put into perspective with money laundering in traditional circuits estimated between 2 and 4%.

THE METAVERS: What about data sovereignty?

As Elsa mentions FERREIRA in DNA (4) “The question is whether we will be able to live in a metaverse or a global digital network as humans, humans with rights and privacy, or as slaves to those who own the metaverse and observe, predict, and manipulate our behavior be able “.

It seems fundamental to preserve the original philosophy of a free and decentralized world, because the web giants will be there to try and control these virtual worlds with their own virtual currency, their interest rates, virtual real estate, their rents virtual homes or offices, your virtual vacations, etc.

Mark Zuckerberg is very clear that he wants to create an alternate, parallel, eternal world where users can evolve, connect, work, and have fun.

It is up to states to react quickly: there is a great risk of losing their prerogatives over these large private companies if the introduction of metaverse seems dazzling and massive. However, nothing says that state control guarantees this “original philosophy”. Your job is to provide security voters users without capturing the entire performance.

BUT

THE METAVERS: it’s included!

Metaverse’s adoption curve will be staggering, and as a result, billions of people will be able to virtually journey across ever-expanding content. A weekend of surfing in Uluwatu, celebrating the Stade Rochelais win over Toulouse in Twickenham, chilling at a gospel mass in Harlem and ending a Sunday afternoon kayaking in the Gorges du Tarn… all without jet lag and for just a few altcoins .

Some numbers:

Number of international tourists in 2019: 1.460 billion

Number of international tourists in 2020: 398 million

World population in 2021: 7.87 billion

Price of a VR headset: 350€

THE METAVERS: an additional source of income for the actors!

This hybridization is a real opportunity. Players can virtualize their activities and thus benefit from an additional source of income. As Daniel DOPPLER, President of Quicktext in TOM, mentions: “Today there is not a single hotel that is not on the internet, I think the same will happen with the metaverse”, and add” So yeah, hoteliers don’t need it now, but I invite them to think about it. For those already lagging behind, the gap widens.”. It will be about skillfully juggling between the real services and the services offered by its digital twin in the metaverses (and even imagining coupled offers) and that the real and virtual streams flow together.

THE METAVERS: soon a realistic experience!

The technologies will be there quickly for a realistic experience. The haptic glove already reflects the sense of touch. The TactSuit jacket, which is already on the market, is equipped with 40 haptic points that emit vibrations to give the feeling of being hit. Another example, the haptic t-shirt designed by OWO, allows you to feel a gunshot, the wind, someone grabbing your arm and even a person’s hug, thanks to 30 electrodes that emit light electrical impulses. The technology is expected to be commercialized by the end of the year at a cost of $450.

FINALLY

Every techno has its duality, its advantages and its downsides. The Crypto-Nft-Metavers ecosystem has the virtue of wanting to give power and freedom to the individual. Are we moving towards polymorphic tourism? As already mentioned in April 2021, Armelle reports SOLELHAC in Tourism of the Future (5)towards a clever mixture between a Virtual mass tourism (for those who do not have sufficient financial resources) and physical class and space tourism (remote places preserved, little frequented and reserved for a financial elite)?

One of the challenges will be convincing virtual tourists of the benefits of real local tourism.

Certainly a scenario (very real) that serves the vision of a more inclusive, benevolent, sustainable tourism … which we all defend. We bet we will find the positive sides of this revolution.

So do you agree that metaverses are a gift for sustainable tourism?
